Car Seat Program

The child safety seat law requires that children ride properly secured in a child safety seat or booster seat until they are at least 6 years old or weigh 60 lbs.

Suggestions for Choosing a Child Safety Seat:

  • When selecting a seat, consider the child's weight, age, height and behavior.
  • Try the seat with the child and in the vehicle to ensure a good fit.
  • Follow safety seat and vehicle owner's manual directions to install the seat in the vehicle.
  • Correctly buckled up, the back seat is the safest place to ride. Never place a baby in the front with an active air bag!
  • Keep babies facing the rear of the car as long as possible, at least until one year of age.
  • Keep children in a seat with a harness as long as possible, until they reach 40 lbs., approximately 3-4 years.
  • Keep older children in a booster seat as long as possible, from about 3-4 years up to at least age 8 years.

What Stage? What Age?

Stage 1: Rear-facing car seat; birth to age 1.

  • Rear-facing only seats
  • Car beds (if baby must be flat)
  • Convertible safety seats

Stage 2: Forward-facing car seat with harness; age 1 and up.

  • Convertible safety seats
  • Forward-facing seats, built-in seats, vests
  • Combination child seat/boosters

Stage3:  Booster seat with lap/shoulder belt; age 3 and up (30-40lbs).

  • Belt-positioning booster with lap/shoulder belt
  • If no shoulder belt, a special seat or harness for larger children is needed

Stage 4: Lap/shoulder belt that fits well; age 8-10 years and up.

Boosters Are For Big Kids

If your child is not using a booster seat, try this simple test the next time you ride in the car together.

The 5-Step Test

1. Does the child sit all the way back against the auto seat?

2. Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat?

3. Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and arm?

4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs?

5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip?

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions,
your child needs a booster seat to ride safely in the car.
